Working With Our Relatives

Our vision and work depend on strong relationships and tradition. We work together, build consensus, and listen to our community. That foundation allows us to show up and invest in the issues they have identified as important. We couldn’t do our work without the vital partnerships we’ve made. Other Native and Latino nonprofits, Tribal Nations, local, state and federal government agencies, and philanthropy organizations have all partnered with us to serve San Francisco’s 18,000 Native peoples. This relational approach to identifying and meeting our community’s needs is Indigenous wisdom in action.

"Creator has given us "original instructions" that compel us to express our gratitude for the Creation we have been gifted with by taking care of this precious gift - and all the life that resides on it. Despite that last few centuries of devastation to our peoples and our homelands, this obligation still exists and our continued indebtedness remains a daily commitment to fulfill this responsibility, including those 'visitors' that now reside on our homelands. "Village SF" is a profound statement of our relationship to our Native relatives that are residing in Yelamu and are in need of care. Through them, we hope to multiply our efforts to care for our homeland as well.”

Yurok Partnership

“We’re still here, connecting to our culture, each other and to those who need to learn from us how to care for this place we now must share. Piece by piece, we’re reclaiming what was taken from us, what was taken from our ancestors. The Village SF is the result of Indigenous people creating solutions and opportunities for Indigenous people. But we can’t do it alone… Urban Indian services have been underfunded for too long.”

Abby Abinanti (Yurok), chief judge of the Yurok Tribe

The Village SF initiative includes a partnership with the Yurok Tribe as they build a rural residential treatment center that will follow Friendship House’s treatment model. The Yurok-Friendship House partnership will create a network of treatment support from the city to rural Native communities. The Yurok-Friendship House partnership will create a network of treatment support from the city to rural Native communities. The Yurok-Friendship House partnership will create more access to tribal housing for federally enrolled tribal members in both San Francisco and on the Yurok Reservation.

"I can truly say that it is an honor to be part of this beautiful partnership between Native Americans and Latinos, who are coming together here in the Mission District to create the things that are essential to all peoples:  safe and affordable housing, access to health care and healthy affordable food, education, and some way to make a living wage. I also want to say, that American Indians and Latinos -- many whom descend from the Indigenous peoples of Mexico, Central and South America -- share similar historical experiences due to the European colonization of the Americas. So in my mind, this re-connection is a natural and beautiful evolution that was bound to happen. El es Dios."

“The EPA’s partnership in the Village SF is really a reflection of this Administration’s commitment to empowering communities. They have a deep understanding that our communities know what’s best for them, what’s most sustainable, and what will have the most meaningful impact on the affected citizens. And at the end of the day, the EPA is putting its support behind a place for Indigenous peoples created by Indigenous peoples.”

Mayor London Breed

“We were pleased to partner with Friendship House early on in the development of the Village SF. San Francisco is proud to be the first city in America to create an American Indian Cultural District, celebrating the rich heritage and contributions of our Native community. The Village SF will be the cornerstone of the district, providing much needed space for services and cultural connection.”

Congresswoman

“Today’s announcement that Friendship House will receive $500,000 from the EPA to support a dedicated gardening, ceremonial and workforce development space for San Francisco’s 18,000 Native peoples is exciting news. This federal funding will ensure the Village SF’s Indigenous Community Garden is a place that promotes climate justice, culture and community building for Native peoples in San Francisco. It was my privilege to secure $750,000 in Community Project Funding for the Village SF last year, and I’m pleased that this important project has now received more support to promote cultural connections in our City.”
